10 Nov The Seven Challenges – A New Tool in Substance Use Disorder Treatment

There is no question that addiction has had a devastating impact on youth throughout Indiana in recent years. “We have seen an increase in the severity of substance use disorders with our clients, and we wanted to ensure our clinicians had the right tools in their therapy toolbox,” says Krista Hoevel, Director of Counseling at the YOC. This is why the YOC is proud to announce the implementation of a comprehensive counseling program called, The Seven Challenges.

This empirically-based treatment intervention has proven highly effective in working with kids in residential placements. The Seven Challenges uses a holistic approach called “Mastery Counseling,” and is designed to motivate clients to evaluate their lives, consider changes they wish to make, and then succeed in implementing the desired changes.

“This intervention also combines well with other treatment methods, which is important given our clients typically need to address multiple issues simultaneously” Hoevel says.

The YOC will implement The Seven Challenges campus-wide, and components of the program will be integrated into each of our existing programs. All counseling and direct-care staff will be trained. The concepts our kids learn in therapy will therefore be reinforced in their daily program milieu. In laying out a timeframe, Hoevel says, “We have already begun using the intervention with clients as part of individual therapy. Group therapy implementation will roll out in January 2021.”

We at the YOC couldn’t be happier to add this powerful and proven tool to our toolbox. Stay tuned for opportunities to learn more details about The Seven Challenges and what it can do for your clients.
