31 May Inspiring Education

Children and teens who live in communities with high levels of poverty are four times more likely to be chronically absent from the classroom due to unstable housing, unreliable transportation, and lack of access to health care. In fact, once a youth reaches sixth grade, chronic absence becomes the leading indicator that a student will drop out of high school. The YOC understands the value of education. Our goal when a child is placed with us is to maintain and advance each child’s education so they can seamlessly transition to their home school when treatment is completed.

In partnership with Muncie Community Schools, The YOC ensures that each resident, regardless of their previous education, is supported and encouraged to pursue their academic goals. Our Educational and Support Services team members work tirelessly to provide individualized plans that meet children exactly where they are. Whether working towards credit recovery, high school graduation, or an HSE program, our qualified staff can provide the help needed.

Students participate in the learning process in a variety of settings including on-ground classrooms with subject-area based teachers, in-program instruction, one-on-one tutoring, digital learning, and attendance at community schools. In conjunction with program staff, our talented team of educational assistants design programs such as STEM experiences, cooking classes, and life-skills training. We believe in honoring effort, both in treatment and in the classroom. Programs such as Student of the Month and our Super Star Social not only recognize the accomplishments of successful students but also provide inspiration for those that strive to improve.

Completing high school is an amazing accomplishment that we celebrate fervently. We also encourage our residents to pursue post-secondary education and provide generous support through the Anna Ullom Scholarship Fund for YOC students who qualify. No matter where a child is in their educational journey, The YOC is here to foster growth and provide opportunities for a bright future.
