The Youth Opportunity Center has been recognized by the
American Psychological Association as meeting
the highest standards of internship training available for
pre-doctoral interns in psychology. This accreditation means that
the YOC is now recognized as one of the finest apprentice programs
available in the nation.
“Obtaining this level of
accreditation is a
long and difficult process that includes a self-study and a site
visit as well as much dialogue and documentation,” explained Dr.
Robin Kohli Director of Psychological Services. The Youth
Opportunity Center first submitted for accreditation in January
2007, completed the site visit in July 2007, and received word
in April 2009 that accreditation had been awarded.
The YOC ranks
as one of only 39 APA accredited internship programs in
Child/Adolescent Clinical Psychology in the United States. Of
the nine APA accredited internship facilities in Indiana, the Youth
Opportunity Center is the only Child/Adolescent training site.
According to Craig, the YOC can expect to attract approximately 22
intern applicants for each available position.
“This will
improve the overall quality of
the candidates and allow those who graduate from YOC’s internship
class to apply for federal jobs, university faculty positions and
other pursuits that require the completion of an APA accredited
internship. In turn, the YOC will be able to provide better services
to our youth and their families,” said Kolhi.
Based in
Washington, DC, the American
Psychological Association is a scientific and professional
organization that represents psychology in the United States. With
150,000 members, APA is the largest association of psychologists
worldwide.
“Completing the APA process was a joint effort by
many
individuals,” said Rick Rowray, CEO. “Special thank yous go
to Dr. Robin Kohli, director of psychological services, Dr.
Dawn Lotter-Griffin, director of internships, Dr. Stan Wenck, past
director of internships, previous interns, Dr. Brandon Robbins and
Dr. Cynthia Gooden, as well as administrative assistants, Emily
Robertson and Jamie Robinson.
